Green Building Council Local Government Leadership Summit
On March 18, HVRC staff attended the Local Government Leadership Summit hosted by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in Hoboken, NJ. This event brought together local government leadership, contractors, and regional organizations to discuss sustainability for buildings and communities. UCGBC offers a specific LEED certification for local governments which goes beyond their green building rating system and provides a framework for evaluating and incorporating sustainability initiatives in the entire jurisdiction across a range of categories. LEED for Cities, in addition to their comprehensive policy library, encourages municipalities to consider and develop different strategies for decarbonizing their buildings.

The City of Hoboken used the results of their LEED certification to build-out a new sustainable park on a brownfield site. Mayor Emily Jabbour and City staff members, Jennfier Gonzalez, Katie Smith, and RJ Theofield, provided an in-depth presentation on the recently completed “ResilienCity Park” which incorporated innovative flood resilient infrastructure into the park design. The City was able to leverage their LEED certification as justification for investing in sustainability projects and to tap into different funding streams.
